Day 3: Setting the Organizational Stage

It's funny because there was a time when I used to think, "Why would I spend a bunch of time creating a storyboard?." However, storyboarding is really important. As a matter of fact, I think it is the most important aspect of web/video creation. As an undergraduate I had an assignment to create a video about mathematics. I thought I would skip the storyboarding part and just shoot as much raw footage as I could. It was a huge mistake. I ended up having to go all way back and write my storyboard and then collect new footage. So, believe me when I say that preparing a good storyboard will save you so much time in the end.

I have no dispute that planning is the process to follow. but i still am not sure how this helps in doing my footage. I know what I want the finished product to look but?? How does writing it down help? I could write a script but how does that fall in with my footage? So many questions...So little time!

I must say I am guilty of not wanting to storyboard...I like to just jump in and start too. However, I have noticed that when it is a large task I do tend to rely on storyboarding so much more. For example, when I plan to create a school website I have to plan it out first. It's such an enormous task and when I first started web design I tried the jump in and go method the first time and it wasn't fun having to go back and redo so much work.

Planning provides that needed thinking time to really understand the process you are going to go through to accomplish a finished product. I don't storyboard for writing tasks...those I still jump in and write and then go through revision stages. However, I do use storyboarding for my "sketch" of a process for a large task like building a school website. During that planning phase it helps give me that organization that is needed to make sure the navigation and file structure will fully support the end product.

I also like for the kids to storyboard for their Claymation videos, because I don't think they go in-depth enough otherwise. For example, I gave "free play" time with the cameras and clay for fun to get them hooked. With no planning there was just "fun" and no message, plot, etc. to be learned from their efforts. The planning helps them realize what they are trying to "communicate" with their product. The ultimate goal is to be able to communicate in a new way that enhances someone elses' viewpoint and knowledge.
